I am an Assistant Professor of Transportation Engineering and Founder of the Transportation Research and Visualization Laboratory in the Department of Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo.
I utilize virtual reality simulation to develop and evaluate the impacts of alternative roadway safety designs and cyber-physical systems on human behavior and safety for drivers and vulnerable road users (VRUs, i.e., pedestrians, bicyclists, micromobility users). Development and deployment of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) prove extremely promising for handling transportation demand issues. However, CAVs also expose VRUs to new safety risks. My research aims to design and test Intelligent Transportation Systems applications and operations that are inclusive of all users on the roadway, while remaining directly applicable to real-world decision-making processes. Primarily, I take a human factors approach towards understanding the implications of new designs and technologies and approach human subject testing from multiple angles to assure not only the safety of subjects, but to push the boundaries of human behavior research.
I am a former Dwight David Eisenhower Fellow at the Federal Highway Administration’s Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center where I worked on connected vehicle applications for pedestrian safety and helped found the Omni-Reality and Cognition Lab at the University of Virginia where I completed my PhD.
I am involved in the Transportation Research Board (TRB), the American Society of Civil Engineers Transportation & Development Institute (ASCE TD&I), Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America), and Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).

Irina Benedyk, is an Assistant Professor at Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, SUNY at Buffalo. She holds B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics and Management with concentration in Maritime Transportation from the Novorossiysk State Maritime Academy, and in Civil Engineering from the Purdue University. In addition, Irina has about 10 years of experience in the marine intermodal logistics and freight transportation sectors. She worked for the one of the largest maritime container carrier CMA CGM S.A. and for forwarding company at various positions starting from import/export specialist to head of consulting department servicing hundreds of clients all over the world.
Dr.Benedyk conducts research in areas of traveler behavior, human factors, travel information, and connected and automated vehicles, with the goal of improving performance, safety, instruction, transportation equity, and driving education. She utilizes a range of complementary experimental techniques, such as immersive driving simulations, instrumented vehicles, psychophysical and physiological measures, surveys, and phycological metrics, and current research topics include examining how sever driving anxiety impacts driving performance of young driver, driving behavior and decision making in snowy driving conditions, traveling difficulties of individuals with high functioning autistic spectrum disorder.
